This article only concerns .uk domain names. Domain names with the extension .co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk can be freely registered.
You must have the rights to register the .uk domain name
.co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk domain names have been around since 1985, but .uk domain names have only been available since June 10th 2014. This means that until June 10th 2014, it was impossible to register domain names such as versio.uk. To prevent the .uk versions of the .co.uk, .me.uk and .org.uk domain names from being hijacked, Nominet made sure that the person who had a the .co.uk, .me.uk or .org.uk domain name, has the first right to the .uk version of this domain name. Since we already had versio.co.uk, versio.uk was reserved for us until June 10th 2019. This means that versio.co.uk has the first right tot the domain name versio.uk.

Am I required to have an address in the United Kingdom in order to register a .UK domain name?
With other registrars you do, but with Versio you don't. The domain name will still be registered in your name (unless you choose anonymous registration).
